The University of Szeged, which has been Hungary's best university in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for years, was featured prominently in the recently published subjects list of the British ranking maker. Based on the results published on April 10, 2024, SZTE tied for first place in the field of pharmacy and pharmacology in Hungary. In addition, it was added to the list in some fields of science for the first time, while it maintains a stable position in several categories, both domestically and globally.
The University of Szeged achieved excellent results in several broad and individual subject areas in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject. In this year's survey, one of the world's most respected higher education activity rating company examined nearly 5,000 higher education institutions, of which 1,559 were finally included in the rankings prepared in 5 broad subject areas and 55 individual subjects.
The best result was achieved by SZTE in the pharmacy and pharmacology subject: it finished in a tie for first place in Hungary and even moved up 50 places internationally, so it was ranked 251-300 this year. There are only two Hungarian universities on the list.
In the broad subject area of life sciences & medicine, SZTE finished in 401-450th place, maintaining its last year's ranking, thus earning a tie for second place in Hungary. In this category, in addition to pharmacy and pharmacology, the university also performed well in other individual subject lists. It also retained its previous position in the medicine subject ranking, finishing in the 301-350th place. It retained the 451-500 place in the biological sciences subject list. Both positions mean second place in Hungary.
The multifaceted professional excellence and recognition of the University of Szeged is confirmed by the fact that this year it was also included in the QS list of the broad subject area of arts and humanities, in the 451-500th place, which means second place in Hungary. Only two Hungarian institutions were included in this list of excellence.
SZTE also maintains a stable position in the broad subject area of natural sciences, ranking 451-500 in an international comparison, in third place among Hungarian universities. Within this category, in the subject of chemistry – just like last year – it is ranked 451-500 globally, second among Hungarian universities.
The University of Szeged – in the broad subject area of engineering and technology – also maintains its position on the computer science & information systems list: it is ranked 601-650, which means third place domestically.
When compiling the QS excellence lists, the evaluations of higher education institutions by the academic sphere and employers were taken into account – with different weighting for each field – and two indicators characterizing the citation of scientific works: the number of citations per publication and the Hirsch index, as well as the international diversity of research collaborations.
